Becoming an Umpire with ENLL
Umpires are an essential part of the East Nepean Little League program. They are the third team on the field. Umpires are responsible for ensuring rules are followed and applied fairly, and games take place in a fun and safe environment. To be an umpire, you must be at least 12 years old by May 1. Adult umpires are also encouraged to register. Here are some other important points to consider:

  • ENLL offers a competitive pay rate per game. Rates per game vary depending on years of experience and the level of play to be officiated.
  • Most games are during the week and start at 6:00 pm. Higher divisions can have game times during the week at 8:30 pm. Game times on the weekend can vary. Game times change slightly in the summer season.
  • ENLL provides shin pads and chest protectors (available at the field).
  • For each new umpire ENLL provides a starter kit for first-time Umpires, which includes an indicator, brush, ball bag, umpire baseball cap, and a Little League patch to sew on your shirt.
  • If a new umpire does not have a face protector/mask, ENLL will provide them $25 towards the purchase of one. A receipt must be handed in order to receive this reimbursement. The umpire-in-chief will provide information on masks closer to the time of the clinic.
  • Umpires are expected to purchase a black collared polo style shirt and grey pants and wear a Jock or Jills and Supporters when they are the plate umpire. They must also download the Little League Rulebook App (available here).

Acceptance to Umpire
Not all umpires who apply are accepted. The number of umpires needed depends on factors such like how many players register for baseball, what age levels there is a demand for umpires, and the number of returning umpires. Umpire registration will only be open for a limited time. Registration after this acceptance of new umpires will be done upon a case-by-case decision made by the ENLL umpire-in-chief.
All Umpires, new and returning, must register every year. Register as soon as you receive notice via email or social media posts. If you would like more information, please get in touch with umpire@eastnepeanbaseball.ca

Umpire Training
Once accepted to umpire East Nepean Little League provides training for umpires at an annual umpire clinic. This training is mandatory training for all first and second-year umpires. However, all umpires are encouraged to attend. This year's training is set for April 20th, 9 am-3 pm, at Sir Robert Borden High School. (location) If you want to learn more about umpiring, East Nepean's umpire-in-chief will hold an open house at 1:00 pm on March 9 at Algonquin College Dome (location). All are encouraged to attend, especially adults.
